Rose Cecil O'Neill
O’NEILL, Rose Cecil, American illustrator, 1874-1944. She published a most unusual illustration in 1909, which was a caricature of her baby brother. It depicted large round eyes, a pug nose and a curvy mouth. She had called it Cupid which in slang became Kewpie. Soon afterwards doll manufacturers made millions of Kewpie Dolls, with tufts of hair, wings and starfish hands, in many materials.
