Mary Kies
KIES, Mary, née Dixon, American. In 1809 she applied for the first patent granted to a woman by the US Patent Office. It was for a method of weaving straw with thread or silk, mainly for making bonnets. However, a fire in the US Patent Office in 1836 destroyed this application, it is unclear whether the application was for machinery or a process, almost certainly machinery.
