Catherine Whiteman
WHITEMAN, Catherine, British student, b-1982. A finalist in the Welsh Student Innovation Awards in 1998, at age 16. Catherine had realised that many cot deaths were a result of over-heating of the room. She devised a simple temperature-regulating mechanism involving a fan running off a 12-volt battery. This design enables the system to be used in reverse with the fan heating the room, so that it acts as an incubator as needed. Third World countries will benefit most from the invention, which is cheap and uses simple and readily available parts. Catherine was extremely creative in seeing both of these functions, the device could well save the lives of some babies.
